Regulations and Operating Environment in China

By Gerry Ong Overview Retailing has been named a strategic industry in Chinas long term national plan. As mentioned in report 1, the opening of China has caused more foreign retail chains to enter the China market. As more foreign companies enter the China market, the Chinese government has come up with changes to regulations in the retail and fashion industries in recent years. In this report we would talk about the updated regulations and a little on the operating environment for clothing companies in China Regulations a) The most important changes to the Retail regulations introduced by the Chinese government (MOFCOM) is the clause on franchising. b) With effect from 1st February 2005, foreign retail chains who want to offer franchises directly to prospective franchisees in China must first established 2 company owned unit in China for more than a year. The reason given by the government for the introduction of this regulation is to protect Chinese companies from buying franchises whose models are not suitable for the Chinese market. c) Franchising in China is complicated process. Foreign firms who want to enter the countries though franchising has to fill in another set of franchise forms and undergo another business registration form. This application would usually take about…. Impact:  The impact of this franchise regulation is that foreign owned retail chains including Foreign Fashion Chains would find the process of entering the country by franchising more tedious. This is especially for mid sized retail chains who are established in their home countries and are not international brands. Thus for small to mid sized foreign fashion firms wanting to enter China through franchising, we would suggest other marketing strategies like Distribution, setting up their own flagship store and  One Alternative would be to enter by Joint Venture agreement or partnership with a China local firm. This could be done either through partnership with local firms or buying into local manufacturing companies.  Another market entry strategy …. Chanukah – Rededicating Yourself To Your Relationship

By Shlomo Slatkin On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate your relationship? Is it what you had imagined when you first got married? Years go by, and while couples are still technically married, they have unconsciously filed for an invisible divorce. How do couples rededicate themselves to their relationship and move towards the relationship they originally envisioned? The story of Chanukah provides us valuable insight into this challenge. Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the Beis HaMikdash (the Holy Temple) after it was defiled by the Greeks. Our Rabbis (Middos 2:3) teach us that the Greeks made thirteen breaches in the Beis HaMikdash and that on Chanukah, the Jewish people closed up those breaches and rededicated the Temple. On a personal level, every Chanukah we must also seal the breaches and rededicate the Temple. As a Jewish home is likened to the Beis HaMikdash, as it also is a dwelling place for G-ds presence, Chanukah is an ideal time to do our own Chanukas HaBais (rededication of our home). In order to rededicate our homes, our relationships, we must first close our exits. Before a couple can refocus themselves on the energy between them, they must make sure that no energy is leaking outside. An exit is an energy leak. It is essentially any behavior we take when we dont know how to talk about our uncomfortable feelings with our spouse. These behaviors are conscious or unconscious ways to avoid dealing with each other. We either withdraw inside ourselves or we go elsewhere looking to get our needs met. Whatever we choose, we drain the relationship of its energy until it becomes lifeless. We, in effect, have filed for an invisible divorce. There are varying degrees of exits. Some are terminal such as divorce, which permanently ends the relationship. Others are catastrophic, exits which seriously damage a relationship to a degree which is often irreparable. The remaining exits are less severe but are so insidious and parasitical that they can do equal damage in the long run. These exits can be intentional, a feeling expressed as a behavior with the clear motivation to avoid involvement with your spouse, or they can be functional, a behavior you enjoy but your involvement in the activity clearly takes energy and time away from the relationship. While some of the latter are essential activities or valid forms of recreation, if one of the reasons you are doing this activity is to avoid spending time with your spouse, it is considered an exit. Here is a list of thirteen common exits that I imagine many of us do: 1) Work 2) Overeating 3) Yiddishkeit- chesed, learning, etc . . . 4) Exercise 5) Internet/Email 6) Entertainment 7) Housework 8) Hobbies 9) Taking care of the kids 10) Sleeping 11) Talking on the phone with friends 12) Reading 13) Avoiding eye contact There are surely other exits that do not appear on this list. Whatever your exits are, it is important to recognize them and understand that these are forms of acting out your frustrations about your marriage. Just as our children may act out when they are hungry or not getting enough attention, adults react similarly when their needs are not being met. When we feel unloved, ignored, or unappreciated we go everywhere but to our spouse to get those needs met. We find others and/or other activities that will meet those needs or we withdraw within ourselves, feeling hopeless about ever possibly getting what we want. It makes sense why we would exit our relationship when the going gets tough. We are mandated by our call to survive to get our needs met. When they are not met we either become angry or afraid, and avoid intimacy. Without the proper communication skills, it is often too threatening to share our frustrations about these unmet needs with our spouse. It is a lot safer to call a friend and complain about your husband or to do the dishes when you are upset with your wife. While the mechanics of a safe and productive dialogue is material for another article, what must be stressed here is that we can only begin to close our exits when we verbalize our concerns to our spouse and transform our feelings into constructive communication. When we do this, we keep the energy that belongs in the relationship where it needs to be. When I work with couples, I have them compile their list of exits and I facilitate a dialogue about them. If you have never done the Imago intentional/couples dialogue with a coach, please do not try this at home. I feel strongly that if you do not know how to discuss these sensitive issues in a safe way, then you may do more harm than help. Imagine if your husband told you that the reason he works long hours is in order to avoid you. While it is great that your husband is conscious about his behavior, you probably wont be too happy to hear it. Therefore, what I advise is to do the following exercise on your own to gain awareness and become conscious of your exits. Make a list of your exits. Place a check by those you are willing to change and an x by those that are difficult to change. Then pick one of the exits that are difficult for you to change, such as staying late at work, and complete the following sentences: 1) The feeling I am avoiding by doing this activity is … 2) When I take this exit, how it affects my relationship … 3) And if in the future I continue to take this exit what I expect to have in my relationship is… 4) One thing I could do differently than take this exit is 5) And if I tried to do this new behavior I would probably feel… This is a great way to become more aware of the behaviors you engage in to avoid being in relationship. While in this home exercise you will not be sharing your findings with your spouse, it may motivate you to start putting more energy back into your relationship. Through this rededication to the sacred space between you, may you begin to see miracles in your marriage. Why Did Jesus Speak in Parables?

By Alan D Campbell Jesus often spoke in parables to illustrate what the Kingdom of God would be like? Why did Jesus speak in parables rather than just speaking more directly about the Kingdom of God? Did he speak in parables so that the people would better understand what he meant or did he have another reason? The Disciples Ask Jesus Why He Spoke in Parables After Jesus had spoken many things to the multitudes in parables. One of his parables was the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:2-3). The disciples were curious about why Jesus spoke to the multitudes in parables. So the disciples asked him directly why he spoke in parables as recorded in Matthew 13:10: “10And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?” (KJV) Jesus Explains Why He Spoke in Parables Here is how Jesus answered them as recorded in Matthew 13:11-15: “11He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” (KJV) Yes, Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes not to make his teaching easier to understand. He spoke to the multitudes in parables so that the multitudes would not understand because of the hardness of their hearts. It was not given to the multitudes to understand, so Jesus did not intend to make his meaning clear to them. He was not begging them to believe on him and to understand his message. In fact, he deliberately hid his meaning from the multitudes so that they would not be converted. The Disciples Were to Understand However, Jesus wanted his disciples to understand as recorded in Matthew 13:16-17: “16But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.” (KJV) Jesus explained the meaning of the parables to his disciples. They had a willing heart; they were eager to learn more about the Kingdom of God. Blindness to be Removed in the Kingdom of God God is fair. Although he has allowed Satan the devil to deceive the whole world (Revelation 12:9), in the Kingdom of God, the blindness will be removed. The knowledge of God’s way will cover the earth even as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9). At that time, everyone will know God and understand his way (Hebrews 8:11). Conclusion Contrary to popular belief, Jesus Christ spoke in parables to confuse what he meant to most people. He explained the clear meaning of the parables to his disciples. It was not the time for the multitudes to be called to salvation. They were blind to the truth of God. In the Kingdom of God, the blindness will be removed. Everyone who has not previously had a chance for salvation will have an opportunity to know God and follow him. That is good news. Alan D. Campbell lives in Brandon, Florida. Ten Tips To Find Great Dates

By Tonja Weimer Would you like to know how to find great dates? Would you like one of those dates to lead to falling in love and staying in love? The path to those goals is an inside job. Here are ten terrific tips that will lead you to the one who is waiting for you: 1. Ask yourself everyday, What do I want? Finding great dates takes some action steps. To build your confidence level, set some simple goals for just one thing that you want. Make a list of the actions it will take to achieve that goal. 2. Explore your passions. What do you LOVE to do? What gives you energy, makes you smile to think about, or seems like a dream that could never come true? What did you always want to do but never got around to doing it? What would it take for you to move closer to doing one of your passions or finding one of your forgotten dreams? 3. Watch your thoughtsthey lead to your actions. If you notice your thoughts are negative, replace them with ones that make you feel good. Spend 20 minutes every day thinking of things that make you happy,–places you want to visit, people you want to be with, objects you would like to own. Picture yourself there. FEEL it. 4. Take actions that keep your mood and thoughts in a positive place. Read books that inspire, watch TV that makes you laugh or gives you hope, and be around people that feed your spirit. Weed the rest out. Do not start or end your day watching news filled with tragic stories. 5. Re-define your purpose and vision for your life. The purpose of your life needs to be very clear. Its who you are and how people identify you. Exercise your creativity to re-invent any part of yourself or your life. 6. Have a career that feeds you. You need enough money for your lifestyle, pride about what you are doing, and excitement for your day. If you feel at a stand-still in your work and career, brainstorm with people about ideas for a career shift. Dont stop searching until you find something that you feel excitement for and if you can’t do it alone, get a coach. 7. Reach out to people and build a network of support. If you are having a bad moment in life and doubt your worth or contribution to others, make a list of five friends and call them and ask them to tell you what you mean to them. This is a very powerful exercise. I guarantee you will never forget it. 8. Exercise. You have to take care of your body so your body can take care of you and take you where you want to go. Besidesit gives you energy and is a mood elevator. 9. Meditation and prayer. They both have a profound affect on mental and physical health. 10. Consider adopting a pet. Pets give us unconditional love, 24/7. Your new dates are waiting for you just around the corner. Do some of the above and watch the dates materialize. You can do it. Growing Bird’s Nest Spruce

By Rachel Paxton The Bird’s Nest Spruce is one of the most common dwarf evergreen shrubs. It is a member of the Norway Spruce (Picea abies) family; its Latin name is ‘Nidiformis’. This attractive, low-growing shrub gets its name from a depression in the center that makes it look like a bird’s nest. A versatile shrub, it is perfect for mixed borders, group planting, rock gardens, and container gardening. It is well suited for transplanting because of its shallow root system. The Bird’s Nest Spruce is very low maintenance because it grows so slowly. At 10 years of age you can expect the shrub to be 1′ tall and 2′ wide. You can, however, prune new growth to give the shrub a desired shape, even to resemble a bonsai plant. This hearty shrub is dark green in color, but in the spring new growth will appear light yellow-green. By late spring the branches are a uniform green. Grown in a variety of soil conditions, this shrub will thrive as long as there is adequate drainage. It prefers full sun with afternoon shade. You can apply low-nitrogen evergreen fertilizer in late fall or early spring for optimal growth, however, the shrub does not require regular fertilization. The most common pests that may bother this shrub are spider mites. Low populations of spider mites can be controlled simply by regularly spraying your shrub with the garden hose. Heavier infestations will require a pesticide. Best grown in zones three through eight, the Bird’s Nest Spruce will eventually achieve a height of 3′ and a width of 2-3′. Plants should be spaced 4-6′ apart. Water needs are minimal, this shrub can survive even in drought conditions. Why Most Marketing Videos Don’t Work

By Marie-Claire Ross Every now and then I will meet someone who has commissioned a marketing video that did not work for their company. It is a sad state of affairs and it is avoidable. Over the years, I have been given many failed corporate communications videos to watch and have found that they all suffer from one or more of the following problems. 1. A poorly written script This would have to be one of the most common problems. The script provides the backbone to any video project and it must be perfect. It needs to be to the point, clear and interesting. Often scripts get written in-house resulting in wordy and highly detailed pieces of prose that do not translate well onto the screen. Quite frankly, they are boring. Unfortunately, pretty shots and expert editing cannot hide a tedious narrative. Worse still, is when the script goes back and forth and the content is played out in an illogical sequence. This results in no viewer being able to quickly understand your core marketing messages, if they can understand it at all. Ideally, a script conveys the most important pieces of information that your target market wants to know and is written with an objective in mind. 2. The video is too long In this day and age of high speed broadband and other time-saving devices, very few of us have attention spans that can handle information for more than a few minutes. Any video over 10 minutes is destined to lose viewers after the first few minutes. Yet, surprisingly there are many marketing videos today that are well over 12 minutes in length. The best marketing videos are short and succinct. Yet, it is far easier to cram everything into a video than to make a short and concise one. In the words of Blaise Pascal, “The present letter is a very long one, simply because I had no leisure to make it shorter”. 3. “The “look mum I’m on TV” scenario While some of us may cringe at the thought of a camera placed in front of us, there are many people who relish the opportunity to show their face on television. This can result in corporate heads droning on incessantly about how wonderful their company is (and what a great job they are doing). Sadly, this does nothing else but soothe corporate egos and turn viewers away. Few people realise that talking to a camera in an appealingly manner is a skill in itself. Having a CEO spieling boring corporate fluff while looking dumbstruck and awkward in front of the camera does not a good video make. However, a charismatic business leader who uses short, punchy (and rehearsed) sentences can add tremendous impact and clout to a marketing video. 4. Poor production values While watching your corporate video, your customers will be left with an impression of what type of business you are and what to expect when doing business with you. A fast way to subconsciously get across the wrong image to your viewer is to have grainy pictures, poorly framed shots and sloppy editing. A well thought out and professionally created television program will create a positive impression in the minds of your prospects. After all, we all watch television and we are used to broadcast quality productions, not wobbly and unfocused shots that scream ‘amateurish’. To produce a good quality television program, it must be made using an experienced A-grade cameraman, a broadcast quality camera and a fully trained editor 5. Target audience is too diverse Many marketing videos often try to get as many messages out to a diverse audience. It is very difficult to produce a video that is ‘all things to all people’. After all, communicating to primary school students, overseas buyers and consumers all in the one video is an extremely difficult feat to pull. Research has found that advertising that targets a number of market segments results in higher profits than advertising that sells to a mass market. Likewise, marketing videos that target a small audience are more successful than those aimed at a large audience. It is often wise to produce several television programs for different audiences, rather than cram all of your messages into one confusing video. 6. Let’s do a video, just because we can! It might seem far-fetched but there are companies that embark on commissioning a marketing video without really assessing if they need one. This can be due to a number of reasons such as using up available budgets, satisfying corporate egos and employees creating work for themselves. You are probably wondering why a video communication producer would even complain about this situation. The answer is simple. A marketing video is an effective tool to increase sales in a company. It is actually painful and embarrassing to watch a video that is a shameless waste of company money. Poorly produced videos might line the pockets of some video producers, but they do little to convince future clients that they are worthwhile. If you are in the market for a marketing video, make sure you follow these simple guidelines to ensure your project is a success, rather than destined for the rubbish bin. (c) Marie-Claire Ross 2004. Party Goods: Order Online, Make Your Own, or Go Shopping

By Gail Leino Party goods can be purchased in packages complete with everything you need for almost any theme party or celebration. No matter what you are celebrating, you can find great deals on party goods online, in department stores, or party supply stores. You are really only limited by your imagination. Deciding what party goods you need, will depend on the type of party you are planning, what you are celebrating, and who will be attending. You can purchase party goods that are ready to be used, and in your party theme format or you can choose plain party goods to be decorated according to your theme. Another option is to have your party at a fun house, playground, party zone, or have a pizza or hamburger party where all the party goods you need are a part of the package deal. Sometimes we think having parties, especially childrens birthday parties, at home are the least expensive option, but when you figure in all the party goods, party favors, decorations, and food, you might be surprised at how much you would actually spend at home. When you figure in your time, clean up, and work, you will most likely agree that at home parties cost as much as pre-planned, purchased party packages. Often teen parties are the most difficult to plan, because teens really dont want a lot of structure or supervision. An alternative to an at home party, would be to take four or five teens to the local mall. Have the guests bring money, rather than gifts, and allow them to shop for a gift while you set up a table in the food court with party goods. You can set the table with balloons, a cake, party goods like plates, napkins, and goodie bag. Allow the teens to open the goodie bag which will contain small gifts, or mall gift cards, and enough money for them to choose which food they want, and purchase it themselves with the money. Everyone is sure to get what they want. Each teen gets the food they like, both the guests, and the guest of honor, get to shop for something they like, the cost of party goods are kept to a minimum, and you can return to a nice, clean home when the party is over. Mrs. Party… Gail Leino is the internet’s leading authority on selecting the best possible party supplies (partysupplieshut.com), using proper etiquette, and living a healthy life while also teaching organizational skills and fun facts. Wedding Flowers For Less

By Glenda Erceg Weddings are very expensive. If you are looking for ways to cut wedding expenses you may want to consider the flowers. Even if you want to have the flowers provided by a rather expensive florist there are ways to cut back. If you want flowers that are unique or created by a pricey florist but still need to shave a little from the floral budget you can consider fewer flowers and arrangements. Use the florist of your dreams but order less. If you need to trim more from the floral expenses consider flowers from a local grocery store floral department. Many stores have excellent floral arrangers and they will work with you to create beautiful floral designs. Lets say neither of the above suggestions is going to work but you still want to have fresh flowers. You can order flowers and put the bouquets together yourself. Or maybe you have a friend or relative who could help with this project. You also could check into hiring a student who is taking classes in floral arranging. Many community colleges offer these courses and the student may also be able to purchase fresh flowers at cost. Many people are very happy with wedding floral arrangements created from silk flowers. If you are creative you can design the bouquets yourself. You may also know someone who can help you with the arrangements. Gather your friends together for an evening of flower bouquet preparations. Have all the flowers and supplies ready, provide some food and have a flower arranging party. Weddings are expensive but you can cut the cost and still have gorgeous flowers for your special day.
